For the past few years, Silvia's paintings have increasingly become more reductive and abstract.  By emphasizing the figure-ground relationship, a simplification of visual information emerged that did not lose any of its conceptual and psychological complexity.  Both the organic and geometric meet at points of tension.  The inherent qualities of the paintófluid, amorphous, layered, spontaneous, though carefully orchestratedówas set against a monochromatic background that resonated as infinite space. These binary statesófluid and solid, finite and infinite, changing and changelessóbecame a central motif and source of meaning. Organic forms spontaneously emerge, fluctuating in an allusive space or seem to barely cling to the surface.   These works allude to the coexistence of inertia and motion, like the rhythmic silence and cadence of emotions and thoughts  soliciting their full revelation.

Currently on view are a series of flower-drawings made during a summer residency at the Skowhegan School of Art in Maine.  The flowers grew wildly near the artist's studio.  These simple delights of nature were a wonderful discovery.  The artist relished capturing some of their intricate workings, patterns, and shapes on paper.   Direct observation was necessary.  However, more importantly was the need  to convey the flora's gentle poetic force by spontaneous, expressive, gestural drawings.   The delicacy and humility of the little flowers serve to reminds us of the loving hands of the Almighty Creator who gently clothes the earth with splendid forms, colors, and fragrances.

The mountains of the Austrian Alps were the source and inspiration for these images.  These magnificent peaks, hidden in a shimmering veil of mist, made for some dramatic pictures.  The visual power of the photographs is achieved by the stark contrast between the dark earth and the white sky above.
